Why Android GO is an error

Why Android GO is an error

The performance of Android is something that has been questioned for years. In our world, we can find terminals from practically 50 or 60 euros, up to more than a thousand , which makes the fragmentation and diversity between the hardware of the devices infinite. For years, only the high range has worked really well, although fortunately, in recent years, the middle range has gained reputation , and that is that we find great alternatives at a low price.

The low range continues, however, being the big problem of Android. While the most basic users may not need much more, the few euros of difference that there is regarding the average range , they make. If to this, we add that Google is making it easier for manufacturers to launch mobile phones with 2013 hardware , the thing gets even more complicated, and this is the topic to be discussed today.

Android GO, the excuse for manufacturers to return to 2013

Why Android GO is an error

When the gig of RAM and the 4 or 8 GB of internal storage seemed dead, Google creates Android GO, to facilitate the manufacturers a “good performance”, in terminals of these characteristics . It is true that this type of mobile phones tend to stay in some emerging countries, and do not arrive regularly in our country, although there are always exceptions. Take as an example the Nokia 1, to understand how unwise it is to get hold of this type of terminal.

Nokia 1
Dimensions 133.6 x 67.78 x 9.5 mm. 131 grams of weight.
screen 4.5 “IPS FWVGA
Processor MT6737M quad-core 1.1 GHz
RAM 1 GB
OS Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition
Storage 8 GB expandable by microSD
Cameras Rear 5 MP with LED flash. Front of 2 MP.
Battery 2,150 mAh
Others Splash protection (IP52), customizable Xpress On cases, Dual Nano SIM, FM radio

89 euros for a mobile phone with VGA screen, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal memory , a MediaTek that we do not recommend to our worst enemy, and a camera that you will never want to open. By less money , about 83 euros,, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425, 2 GB of RAM, HD screen, 13 megapixel camera …

Needless to say, if we deign to spend 20 or 30 euros more, and we go to 100 euros, we have even better alternatives. Mobile phones, yes, but totally usable and without specifications from 5 years ago .

Android GO makes sense, but not the phones that use it

Why Android GO is an error

Android GO would make some sense if the phones that carry this hardware were sold at 40 or 50 euros because, honestly, they are not worth another euro. The promise of smaller apps, optimization of memories and a lighter system is a great thing , as long as you do not encourage the creation of hardware that is born obsolete in 2018.

Needless to say, Android GO can be customized by the manufacturer , and it does not guarantee a clean experience like Android One. This makes manufacturers like Samsung make their own version of the old Touchwiz with Android GO apps, what the performance party starts .

There are no excuses, no personal opinions, no subjectivities along the way. Objectively, the current phones with Android GO are not worth it , not even for the most basic public. We hope that, as happened with Android One, Android GO will evolve and stop being an entry-level mobile system, and lead to an optimized and light version, which does not have to go hand in hand with obsolete specifications.
