While most smartphone makers are creating versions of their standard and extra-size smartphones or XL, Sony believes that there is still a market for a small, compact flagship that does not skimp on specs. But is there still a need for a small phone with high-caliber specifications or that consumers have fully adapted to the large number of widescreen smartphones we have today? Discover in our complete review of the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact!

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact- Design

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, analysis: Specifications, features, prices, etc.

The Xperia XZ1 Compact, as the name implies, is a smaller version of Sony’s flagship product, the Xperia XZ1 and, as such, shares many of the same features and specifications. Apart from the smaller size of the phone, there are some key differences, the most notable is the design of the phone.

Instead of the rounder and slightly curved design of the XZ1, the XZ1 Compact is more reminiscent of classic Sony designs with a more square rectangular appearance. There are some light tapers but most of the XZ1 Compact has a flat look on all sides and has a less aggressive loop design compared to the XZ1.

It is also worth noting the construction of the phone, since it is made mainly of plastic, while the XZ1 has a metal construction. Despite the difference in material options, the XZ1 Compact has a very strong and rugged feel, and there are hints of metal on the top and bottom of the phone that add to the overall build quality of the phone. The body of the phone is covered with a non-glossy satin finish that provides a good grip and does not attract fingerprints.

If it was not obvious enough, the main attraction of the XZ1 Compact is that it is as powerful as the standard XZ1, only smaller. This smaller size is equivalent to a phone that is an absolute breeze to use in one hand.

Many manufacturers are trying to make bigger phones getting bigger, but Sony simply made a smaller phone. While having a small phone can have its drawbacks, it is extremely stimulating to use a phone that can be navigated without two hands or by shuffling to reach the far corners of the screen.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact- Screen

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, analysis: Specifications, features, prices, etc.

A smaller body naturally means a much smaller screen. The XZ1 Compact screen is a 4.6-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1280 × 720 that is 0.6 inches smaller on the diagonal than the XZ1 and also of lower resolution.

Compared to many smart phone screens we have seen in 2017, the XZ1 Compact screen is quite standard. It is surrounded by thick bevels on all sides and has no extravagant curves or rounded corners. It is a screen that might sound little overwhelming, but it is a more than useful screen, especially on a smartphone of this size.

The resolution of 720p is low but on a 4.6-inch screen it works perfectly fine, which is equivalent to 319 ppi. Clearly it is not the sharpest and, having become accustomed to quad HD screens, my eyes could see the difference immediately. But it’s still sharp enough to read the text comfortably, browse through photos or surf the web.

Regardless of the sharpness, the quality of the screen is quite good since the colors are pleasantly vibrant, the viewing angles are good and the outdoor visibility is not a problem in direct sunlight, as long as the screen has the maximum brightness.

Sony software allows you to adjust the colors of the screen with some different profiles that can change the intensity and contrast of the screen, and you can also make white balance adjustments to better suit your tastes.

If you are big on media consumption, the XZ1 Compact screen will not offer the best experience simply because of its small size, which is the only real disadvantage of this screen. It still works well to watch YouTube or play games, but the small amount of real estate on the screen seems undeniably close.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact – Performance

The entrails of the XZ1 Compact are completely identical to its big brother. The XZ1 Compact features the same Snapdragon 835 processor with 4 GB of RAM and, as expected, the phone works wonderfully. It’s quick to start applications, play games, and swipe and scroll through web pages or the Android interface is fluid and fluid.

The lower resolution screen undoubtedly makes the phone feel even more agile due to the lower voltage that is placed on the processor. The phone works just as well as any other flagship with the same specifications and regardless of how much you throw it, the XZ1 Compact was always able to keep up.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact- Hardware

As far as the rest of the phone hardware is concerned, there are no compromises here and the XZ1 Compact comes with all the features you would want in a smartphone. For starters, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack and the XZ1 Compact offers the typical amount of audio capabilities like Sony’s previous phones, including Sony’s DSEE HX technology that will expand compressed music files for sound from closest high resolution. Support for other high-resolution audio codecs such as LDAC is also included.

The XZ1 Compact also features dual front stereo speakers, which gives the upper and lower bezel of the phone a purpose. The speakers are clear, without distortion, but they definitely lack volume compared to other phones with a front speaker configuration.

For storage, the phone is available in a single storage capacity of 32 GB, but if you need more, there is a microSD card slot with support for up to 256 GB of additional storage. IP68 water and dust resistance is also on board, protecting the phone from occasional splashes in rain or dipping.

The phone has a fingerprint sensor on the side power key but, like the latest generations of Sony devices, the fingerprint sensor has been omitted in the EE model. UU It is something that we have become accustomed to with Sony phones, but it is still disappointing that consumers in the US. UU Do not have access to this function.

Despite the smaller size of the phone, the capacity of the battery is still the same 2700 mAh power pack as the XZ1 standard. This sounds small for a phone in 2017, but it has proven to be more than enough. In addition, the 720p lower resolution screen has a big impact on the phone’s longevity.

The XZ1 Compact has been quite the marathon runner, giving me two full days of use before needing a load. I consider myself a heavy user since I see a lot of YouTube and play for several hours a day on my phone, so I was very impressed with the battery life of the XZ1 Compact. The screen in time consistently reached the mark of 5 to 6 hours.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Camera

With the exception of the front camera, the experience of the camera in the XZ1 Compact is identical to that of the XZ1. The XZ1 Compact features the same 19 MP Exmor sensor facing backwards as the XZ1 with 5-axis image stabilization, 4K video recording and slow motion video with 960 frames per second.

Instead of the 13 MP front shooter of the XZ1, the XZ1 Compact has an 8 MP front camera but is more than capable of making video calls and taking selfies. It is a wide-angle lens that facilitates adjustment in the frame, but suffers from a slight distortion of the barrel towards the edges.

Sony calls the rear trigger a “Motion Eye” camera because it is able to predict and capture unexpected movements. The way this works is a fairly simple process and the camera does everything automatically. When the camera detects an unexpected movement, such as a person running or a moving car, it will predictively capture three photos in addition to the one you take and give you 4 photos. Then you can evaluate the results and choose the one that looks best or keep them all.

It is a clean and useful camera trick that works very well and when combined with Sony’s predictive hybrid autofocus, the camera can easily capture subjects in motion with little or no blur.

The other outstanding feature that is also available in the standard XZ1 is the 3D scanning capability through Sony’s new 3D creative application. This application allows you to scan faces, food or any other random object with its freeform scanning technology. For a mobile product, the 3D scanning of the XZ1 Compact is impressive and Sony is working to make this technology more useful. For now these scans can be used as wallpaper, GIF and can be shared on social networks, but eventually these scans can be used as avatars of games or to be inserted into a game once these associations are available.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, analysis: Specifications, features, prices, etc.

The scans can be backed up and synchronized with the cloud to keep them safe and you can even print them if you have a 3D printer. If you do not have a 3D printer, the 3D creative application allows you to easily order your prints through Shapeways or Sculpteo, both with whom Sony has partnered.

The quality of three-dimensional scans is very accurate and it looks amazing, but to get the best results, you’ll want to create scans in well-lit areas. Scans in low light conditions will make it difficult to capture the details correctly, which often resulted in deformed scans in my tests.

With the same rear camera and the same image processing, the image quality is the same as that of the standard XZ1. With adequate lighting, color reproduction is pleasant but not oversaturated, and there are many details and sharpness. But like the XZ1, the biggest weakness of the XZ1 Compact is the dynamic range. The shadows are too dark and details are lost in these areas.

The camera works decently in low light, but the lack of optical image stabilization is evident, since photographs do not always come out with sharp focus. The white balance can sometimes be problematic and in situations of extreme low light, the reflections may seem too exaggerated with a lot of bloom or flash effects.

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact- Software

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, analysis: Specifications, features, prices, etc.

When it comes to software, Sony has a great advantage since the XZ1 Compact is currently one of the few smart phones on the market to ship with Android 8.0 Oreo . All features of Android 8.0 remain intact, such as notification points, native image, improved visual enhancements, new autocomplete APIs and much more.

Sitting on top of Android Oreo is Sony’s own skin that does not drastically alter the experience (since it’s still very close to stock), but Sony’s skin feels outdated in some ways. The app drawer, for example, still uses a dedicated button in its dock instead of the up-slide that pure Android uses. Sony’s skin, however, includes some nice features, such as customizable themes and the integration of Playstation. Outside of the typical Sony application package, the software has virtually no bloatware.

Pricing and final thoughts

The Xperia XZ1 Compact is available as an unlocked GSM device and has a starting price of $ 599.99. It can be purchased through retailers such as Best Buy or Amazon and, at the time of writing this document, can now be found at a discount. Unfortunately, this phone will not reach the shelves of the company in the short term if that is your preferred method of purchase.

The price of 600 dollars is obviously very high considering that there are many other flagships with better specifications and more advanced designs for an equal or lower price. However, the XZ1 Compact has its advantages, such as the 3D scanning capabilities and Android Oreo, ready to use.

But ultimately, what comes down to how much that factor is worth compactly for you. After all, that is the main attraction of this phone. Nowadays, it is difficult to find a small size smartphone with the best features and if your main priority is usability, you will not find a phone that does it better than the XZ1 Compact.
