Samsung, LG and Motorola, the three Android brands that resist the onslaught of Apple in the US

Talking about market shares and best-selling brands is a difficult task. The companies are jealous when it comes to offering official sales data -except for some exceptions- and, unfortunately, we depend on different agencies and consultants to know the figures, more or less exact. Today we are going to talk about American market , where, as you well know, Apple is the queen and lady of the smartphone sector . There are only three Android companies that are capable of dealing with it and are, as the owner says, Samsung, LG and Motorola.

It has been the children of Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) who have published this information based on a series of surveys of 500 people who bought a new mobile in the second quarter of 2018 . The United States has a population of 325.7 million inhabitants, so 500 do not seem an overly representative sample, but it is the data that we have available. Let’s take them with tweezers.

According to CIPR, iOS has improved the number of activations with respect to the previous year . To be exact, Apple would have gotten a 36% of the total of activations in the United States, while Android remains with 63%. We are missing 1% in this sum, which, we understand, refers to other operating systems such as Windows Phone -even mobile phones are sold with it- or features phones . Like Apple, Samsung has achieved another 36% of activations – So now they are “tied” -. LG, for its part, is left with just over 10% and Motorola with just 3%.

According to CIRP, “Apple had its best sales season in February, even though iPhone sales have dropped 1.2% year-over-year, dropping to 77.3 million units. The slowdown was offset by an extremely high selling price of $ 796.42, boosted by a good performance of the iPhone X. ” . In the same way, Mike Levin, co-founder of CIPR , says that “Apple has improved at the expense of Samsung, whose share of activations has been reduced compared to last year” and believe that “There will be a consolidation in the market of smartphones with Apple and Samsung in the lead” . Likewise, “other players have lost ground with the passage of time, a trend that, we hope, will continue in the coming months” ._.

Possibly, the market, not only American, but global, be decided in the second half of 2018 , when Samsung launches its Note9 and Apple its iPhone X and its new iPhone 9 – or whatever you want to call them. The United States is a place where Apple has a wide presence and in which it maintains a privileged position. Not so in Spain, for example, where Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi lead the rankings and Apple remains more in the background.
