In Play Store we currently find about 3 million applications. The requirements of Google for developers are not as restrictive as some would like, which allows certain freedoms that can end up compromising users. Today, talk about the permissions that these applications have , and is that about 9 out of 10 have free will through our system.

Specifically, 89% of the applications on Android have access to sensitive information of the terminal, due to the system of permissions that we find in our operating system . The figures are even more striking when compared to what we find in iOS, a system in which there is not even the possibility of access to certain functions of the phone by third parties.

89% vs 39%, Android still does not provide confidence

However, as far as deeper permissions are concerned -_risky permissions, according to Sysmantec-, we began to see large differences between the two operating systems . In total numbers we talk about 89% of Android apps with access to this type of permissions, compared to 39% in the Apple operating system.

  • Location services: Android 45% | iOS 25%

  • Access to the camera: Android 46% | iOS 25%

  • Audio recording: Android 25% | iOS 9%

  • Access to the call log: Android 10% | iOS: developers can not access

  • Read SMS messages: Android 15% | iOS: developers can not access

The B side of the study

89% of apps on Android have access to sensitive information

Although iOS is more restrictive when it comes to giving access to certain permissions, we must understand that the operation of both systems is quite different . If for example, we download a Zooper widget and we want to see the missed calls and SMS in our main screen, it is necessary that the app has the appropriate permissions . In our operating system we find quite complete applications that require a greater amount of permissions with respect to iOS, so these data are understood.

The problem comes when we download a game or some application that has little or nothing to do with the permissions that it asks for. It is quite common for an app to ask for localization permits, and if you reject them, it does not work . This in iOS does not happen – the odious phrase -, at least in applications that do not have to do directly with GPS.

The data is not a drama, if you act with a head

That the applications have access to permissions is not a problem, since it is you who must provide them individually , thanks to the latest versions of Android. If an app asks the camera for permission, calls registration or voice recording, and has nothing to do with any of those functions, and if that app does not work for not giving them, do not install it .

As always, in Android the user is responsible for certain behavior of the terminal, something that is minimized in iOS, a system that being more restrictive does not require much attention from the user.
