For no other reason than reaching a vanity milestone, Blake Jamieson and I decided that we wanted our public pages to be verified.
We both think it could help us look a little more believable online and potentially help us land more commitments to talk. Although we were both denied four months ago the first time we applied, we refused to give up so easily. We changed some small things in our public Facebook pages , we publish consistent native content and then activate a very modest advertising budget.
Blake maximized his video content, since he understands that Facebook is strongly supporting the video. I changed my approach to share only links, publish content in a longer way.
In general, the process to establish our profiles to see verifiable took us a few hours of time and less than $ 30 in advertising expenses. After much anticipation, both were awarded the small blue digital badge of Internet credibility. I do not know why, but for me, this was really exciting.
Regardless, immediately after Blake initially announced that he had been verified after his first week of testing, I went through the process and it was verified in 48 hours. Then a handful of our friends came to us for advice.
They were surprised to learn how simple the application process is.
Despite the common assumption, verification seems to have nothing to do with the number of fans a page has.
With an adequate positioning, a bit of effort put into the content, and a small advertising budget, we feel that anyone can get their public page verified on Facebook, as long as they fall into one of these categories: Public Figure, Actor, Athlete or Musician.
To get verified , you will need some things before submitting your application.
1. An existing public page under your name (you can not use your personal page).
2. A history of native content published on your page.
3. Some media references that have your name or image.
4. A web page.
5. An iPhone or iPad with an Internet connection (Android devices should work in a few months).
6. The application of Facebook Mentions.
With that said, we will go into how to get verified on Facebook:
Step 1. From your computer, if you are not an actor, journalist, musician or athlete, change your category of blogger, business person, writer, author or any other category that has your page in the list of public figures.
Step 2. Under prizes, put the applications that were in, the titles of the articles, followed with links.
Step 3. Write a long bio form describing who you are and what you do. Mine is a bit long, so this is an example of Blake.
Step 4. Download the mentions of Facebook on your iPhone.
Step 5 Once you download the application and open it, click on “Start”
Step 6 Write your name. Since it has not yet been verified, your page will not appear. That is fine though.
Step 7 As your page has not yet been verified, click on “My page is not verified …”
Step 8 Now a form will be loaded. Select the page of your personal brand.
Step 10. Run powered posts or ads for around $ 5 a day for a week. Blake had an advertising budget of around $ 3 a day for a week. I made around $ 10 per day for 48 hours.
After the presentation, now all you can do is wait. You will get a notification to see if your profile was verified in a week with a blue check mark, in addition to using the mentions application that is super clean and easy to use.
How reliable is this process and does it work for others?
Blake’s friend, Lauren Mayhew , who showed up at Superbowl XXXV, had approached him to see if it would be verified. It worked without any problem.
Also, if you are concerned about the count of followers or how many people like your page is a problem, the journalist Albert Chen only has 6 to his page, but he has also verified.
But why should you get verified and what are the benefits of having a personal brand?
Get verified is double:
- Allows you to use the Facebook Mentions application.
As someone who understands the importance of a personal brand, I was able to surpass myself within the first 20 most-followed writers of Quora Top within a year and a half. From there, Blake and I were able to grow our Twitter followers to tens of thousands. But when looking at our Facebook pages, we did not have the same types of followers. Blake and I were always limited with the ability of the platform to allow us to interact with the pages the way we wanted, unless we discarded a ton of money in ads. So instead, we just put them in the back as something that was there.
The Facebook Mentions application is without a doubt the best tool I have used to manage my personal brand on Facebook. It allows me to interact with my public page in the same way that I interact with my personal page, but with additional functions.
These features range from being able to comment and like other pages (even on personal pages), connect with other successful people to obtain stories, register at Business , synchronize Facebook messages to Twitter and Instagram, put a Q & A and even provide a life Video to your entire feed on demand.
Due to these key features, my personal engagement rate with my page went from paying my assistant to upload a link to the day while I was taking a photo to have conversations and discussions on Facebook, both on my site and on others. Growing our public pages in the same way we have with other platforms will not be a problem for us any longer.
- Create instant credibility behind your name.
Accept the change.
Believe me when I say this, but when I first saw people starting to charge for social media management, I thought it was a joke. I really could not imagine how companies could get away with hiring companies that put children in charge of their brand. But that may be because I have extensive experience in the automotive industry that I never talk about. An industry that is so backward and trapped in the past that it is not even fun anymore.
In spite of everything, when the dust began to settle, I began to accept the change. I understood the importance of what social media could do for a business. The same thing happened to me with the personal brand.
Credibility is something that is changing in our world. Years ago, it was not like that. But nowadays, people always seem to judge others based on the number of followers they have, what platforms they use, if they are verified, and so on. I thought my next Quora was just a number, until one day I was recognized at a house party full of people working in Finance in New York, 3000 miles away from home, all because I wrote a few articles about Quora. This happened a few other times, but at the end of the day, the brand recognition of my name has led me to be someone that people would never recognize and potentially be overlooked in contract offers to be able to book more work and conversation opportunities. .
That credibility in itself has been invaluable. Something that I would never be able to put a dollar amount behind, because it has opened more doors in my life than I ever thought was possible. In addition, the effects of the compounds of year, year after year, after year. An example of this would be an invitation to one of Keith Ferrazzi’s famous dinners.
At the end of the day, however, the blue icon is only 1,256 pixels on a digital screen. But it is more than that. For Blake, Facebook had begun to feel repetitive and uninspiring. Getting verified has inspired you to distribute higher quality content on your page. Blake feels that quality and consistency are now his duty, and that motivation is exactly what he needed. For me, I limited the use of my public page, but the Menciones application allowed me to interact on Facebook in the same way that I do with my personal page, without having to worry about the stress behind adding people I do not know in my personal space .
Now we both have a renewed sense of vigor to invest heavily in the platform. And best of all, you can too!
I would love to know about your verification experience. Comment below with the URL of your fan page and what the process was like for you.
